Cuenesics is an interaction design study for public displays and mid-air gestural interaction. It proposes a design space for hand-gesture-based mid-air selection techniques on interactive public displays, along with four specific techniques that have been evaluated in different real-world locations. Results from this research are summarized in this publication.

The interactive and participatory installation SCSD (Smart Citizen Sentiment Dashboard) goes on tour within the Connecting Cities EU Initiative, started by Public Art Lab, Berlin. We are extremely excited to be able to extend the project and adapt it to the challenging and innovative media facade of Ars Electronica, Linz, Austria. More to come soon!

Smart Citizen Sentiment Dashboard (SCSD) is an ongoing research and artist collaboration between Moritz Behrens (UCL) and me. It is an interactive and participatory installation that lets citizens engage with and compare opinions on urgent challenges in their cities and across connected cities. SCSD translates instant citizen feedback facilitated by custom-made urban devices into a visual language, which is displayed in real time on a media facade or urban screen. The media facade and its surrounding turn into a stage for social encounter and debate. The aim is to create an open, aesthetic dialogue about the quality of urban living, by playfully allowing people to convey their opinion about urgent challenges.
On-going research project. The project “Reveal-it!” envisions the idea of revealing on-site data about the citizens’ energy consumption in urban communities. It proposes a participatory intervention for interactively discovering and visualizing this data via public projection on urban surfaces. Images of several real-world deployments and design process sketches can be seen in our Flickr set.
